MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) --- More than 200 middle and high school students spent the day at City Hall for Milwaukee's 15th Annual Girls' Day.
The event provides an opportunity for students to engage with local leaders who have dedicated their lives to public service. At the start of the day, the girls enjoyed a welcome from Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson and were greeted by other women in local government and community before breaking off into different workshop sessions.
District 6 Alderwoman Milele Coggs started Girls' Day a few years after she first joined the Common Council. At that time, she was the only woman in that role.
"I thought about what are the ways that we can attract more young ladies to think about public service and elective office," Ald. Coggs said.
The event is all about exposing young ladies to those opportunities and empowering them. The one-day event was filled with education and networking opportunities and lunch was served. A scholarship and the Vel Phillips Trailblazer Award were also presented at the event.
