Gwen Moore celebrates funding for MacCanon Brown Homeless Sanctuary
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Democratic Congresswoman Gwen Moore gave a warning for women in the wake of Tuesday’s election.
“God help a woman who lives in a place like Florida or Texas, as we’ve seen that the numbers of women who are dying because of these laws -- We're going to have to be there to pick the pieces up," Moore said.
The re-elected congresswoman spoke at the MacCanon Brown Homeless Sanctuary on Center Street. She was there to highlight some new funding for the shelter – $500,000 towards the construction of a stair tower.
“The construction of this project is to really provide people the very basic of needs for people who are homeless, near homeless, families that have more mouth than money, and people who don’t need to be judged, they need to be fed,” said Moore during her statement.
Moore called the facility a "beacon of hope" to the community as she reflected on living not too far from where the sanctuary is located.
“Right there, in that house, was a place where everybody in the household dug through all the couch cushions, and pockets, and old purses, looking for enough change so that we could prepare a meal,” said Moore.
The stair tower will help in the development of the repurposed warehouse as well as provide access to the building’s five floors.
The facility is dedicated to serving people in need and provides serval services such as tutoring, wellness checkups, lead awareness events and warm meals.
The construction of the stairway is in progress, with phase one and two of the first floor already completed.
