MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee raised its Pride flag on Monday, June 3, to celebrate Pride Month.
The flag now flies outside the Zeidler Municipal Building next to City Hall.
This year, the city is flying the Intersex Progress Pride Flag, which combines the traditional rainbow flag with colors representing people of color, transgender individuals and the intersex community.
Mayor Cavalier Johnson spoke at the event, beginning his statement with a rousing, "Happy Pride, Milwaukee!" He then emphasized the value of diversity in the city.
"Here in Milwaukee, we celebrate and uplift those voices," Johnson said. "I’m pleased and honored to be an ally, to be a friend, and to help lift these voices in our city."
Alderman Peter Burgelis and Alderwoman JoCasta Zamarrip also spoke at the event, expressing gratitude for the Intersex Progress Pride Flag and what it stands for, as well as an optimistic spirit about the state of the Pride movement in Milwaukee.
The Pride flag will not only fly at the Zeidler building; it will fly outside other city buildings throughout June.
