Health department temporarily closes Nehring's Sendik's on Downer due to rodent droppings

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee Health Department (MHD) has temporarily closed Nehring's Sendik's grocery store on Downer Avenue after mouse and rat droppings were found in the basement and first-floor areas.
According to the health department, rodent droppings were first found in a basement storage area away from food on April 15. During a reinspection on April 29, droppings were found in the dry food storage area, and MHD informed the business that any further spread could lead to closure.
Officials say during a follow-up on May 5, fresh mouse and rat droppings were found throughout the basement storage and first-floor areas, including the kitchen and retail space.
An immediate closure order was issued, and Sendik's was advised to clean and sanitize all affected areas while working with a licensed pest control company prior to reinspection.
MHD says closures remain in effect for at least one night to allow for sanitation and to monitor for new activity.
