MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- As the school year ends and the weather warms up, Milwaukee leaders are pushing the city's youth to stay busy this summer.

Mayor Cavalier Johnson launched the third year of the Hello Summer program Wednesday, June 11.

It's a one-stop-shop to link students with job opportunities, extracurricular activities, and community events while they're out of school.

Police Chief Jeffrey Norman was at Wednesday's kickoff event. He says the program is crucial to keeping kids safe and on the right track.

"This is not something that we could do or should do, this is something we shall do," said Chief Norman. "Because as we can see with some of the issues in our city, this is because children need this type of investment and this type of support, this time of wrap-around."

Hello Summer has dozens of programs available for kids, jobs with organizations throughout the city, and events to check out all season long.
