Deadly crash near 36th and Mitchell in Milwaukee is second on street this year
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) – A deadly crash in Milwaukee’s Burnham Park Neighborhood is the second on the same street this year, according to court documents and neighbors.
Around 3 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 15, Milwaukee police responded to the scene of a deadly crash near 36th and Mitchell. The victim, who has not been identified yet, died at the scene.
Milwaukee police say a second person in the car was critically injured and was taken to a local hospital.
Earnest Burton has lived in the neighborhood for 15 years. He said he saw police leaving the scene Sunday morning. He says drivers speed in the area often.
“Everybody seems to be in such a hurry,” Burton said.
The car involved in the crash drove into a tree, based on photos taken at the time of the crash. Burton said there were candles already at the scene for another victim in a crash last month.
According to a criminal complaint, a West Milwaukee police pursuit ended in a fiery crash in the same area on Jan. 4. According to the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office, 18-year-old Izack Zavala was killed.
Burton said he saw and heard that January crash.
“That was kinda crazy to hear and come out and see,” Burton said.
Burton said a roundabout was added to the street at one point to try to curb speeding in the area, whoever, he said sometimes drivers move quickly around it.
“They put the roundabout to slow down the traffic because people did used to speed through here and everything, but now it’s just something for them to try and tackle and keep going fast,” Burton said.
Burton said he hopes the problem of reckless driving in this area is addressed so there won’t be a third deadly crash on the block.
“I don’t know what they’re going to do, but they need to do something,” Burton said. ““Something needs to happen.”
