Hesselbein backs 100% tax on anti-weaponization fund payouts
CBS 58 MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) – The state's top Senate Democrat, Dianne Hesselbein, has filed legislation that would fully tax any money that could go to people who took part in the Jan. 6 insurrection.
President Donald Trump created the Anti-Weaponization Fund to help his political supporters. Hesselbein’s No Taxpayer Dollars for Insurrectionists Act is short and to the point. The two-page bill would impose a 100% income tax rate on any money rewarded to someone in the state from the President's Anti-Weaponization Fund. That means anyone who receives that money would then have to pay all of it back in taxes
“You are not going to get a dime or a nickel of that money unless we are going to be taxing it, because you don’t deserve to be rewarded for your bad choices that you have made,” State Senator Dianne Hesselbein, (D) Minority Leader, said.
Congressman and Republican candidate for Governor Tom Tiffany was asked about this topic earlier this week. He seemed to be open to the idea of paying money to people who participated in the Jan. 6 insurrection, although he did admit he would need more information on who would qualify.
“I mean, I would want to take a look at what was the harm that was done to those victims, if it's significant enough, perhaps they should receive compensation,” Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Tiffany said.
He did say he wouldn’t support anyone who harmed police officers during the insurrection getting a payout. He also feels the appointed officials who caused the harm should be charged.
“I am asking the administration to give us more, as far as how, exactly, they expect to implement this,” Tiffany said. “Just one thought that I have in regards to it is that maybe some people are due compensation. What I think is more important is those who have abused their authority in a federal agency. They should be charged.”
Hesselbein feels this is a waste of taxpayer dollars and that Republicans in Congress should stand up and speak out against the President’s actions.
“I am hoping Republicans, not just in the state of Wisconsin but in the entire United States, stand up together and say enough is enough,” Hesselbein said. “We are in a war with Iran that Congress didn’t approve of. Now there is a slush fund for people who did illegal activity. What is going on?”
Lawmakers at the Capitol are not currently in session, but Sen. Hesselbein is hoping some lawmakers will co-sponsor the bill. She says regardless, she will be bringing this legislation forward to the next session if she is re-elected.
Governor Gavin Newsome, in California, has vowed to tax the Ant-Weaponization Fund at 100%, and a bill has been filed in New York to do the same.
