Historic marker approved for site of Wisconsin's oldest gay bar, This Is It!

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Wisconsin's oldest gay bar will soon become the second LGBTQ landmark officially recognized in the state.

This Is It! closed abruptly in March of 2025 after nearly 57 years. The bar had served as a popular gathering space for Milwaukee's LGBTQ+ community since opening in 1968.

Nearly a year after its closure, state preservation officers approved a state historic marker for the landmark business.

"Thanks to fundraising efforts of the Wisconsin LGBTQ History Project, working in collaboration with the property owner, the East Town Association, the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center, the City of Milwaukee Department of Public Works, and the Wisconsin Historical Society," a press release says, "This Is It will not be forgotten."

The historic marker will be installed outside the building formerly occupied by This Is It!, at Wells and Jefferson in downtown Milwaukee.

The Wisconsin LGBTQ History Project says a dedication ceremony and celebration will be announced at a later date.
