House fire leaves 1 dead in Racine, no working smoke alarms were present

RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) - A woman was found dead in a house fire in Racine early Monday, July 8.

The Racine Fire Department responded to the fire near W. Crescent and Lydian at 6:44 a.m.

Firefighters report they observed thick black smoke coming from the chimney and vents, with the fire being contained within 20 minutes. The woman's body was discovered near the fire's origin.

No working smoke alarms were present in the home at the time, according to RFD. The fire remains is still under investigation.

Authorities took time in a press release to remind local households to install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on each level of a home.
