'Heartbroken': Freya Skye concert ticket troubles caused by 'barcode glitch,' StubHub spokesperson says

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The concert was sold out, but for many, getting in was anything but smooth.

On Wednesday night, fans packed Milwaukee's Landmark Credit Union Live to see artist Freya Skye, just to hit ticket troubles at the door.

"I was feeling really disappointed because I've been waiting a really long time for this concert just to not go," said Marley Tillman, who came with her mother after receiving tickets as a birthday present. "I was really excited; I love Freya Skye."

Her tickets had been purchased through StubHub, an online third-party marketplace.

But when she went to get them scanned, an error message kept popping up, causing Tillman's night out to turn into a night back at home.

"As a father, I was definitely mad, yeah, I was upset for her," said Chris Tillman. "It's frustrating because you just want to get to the bottom of it and solve the situation."

And she wasn't the only one.

"I've used StubHub in the past and never had a problem, but this was just pure devastating," said Calle Phillips, who had driven herself and her two daughters, Love and Aamira, from La Crosse, Wisconsin. "With us, our tickets were just never transferred."

Phillips said dozens of concertgoers were outside of the music venue, visibly upset when they couldn't get in.

"There was a lot of young girls and moms just in tears and heartbroken, so I told Love, let's put some music on and let's start singing," Phillips said.

That turned into an impromptu concert, with a large group of girls singing their favorite Freya Skye songs in unison.

"I felt so bad for everybody else too, because they were all so sad. I just don't even know," Love Phillips said. "Older people crying, moms crying, I'm pretty sure there were dads crying."

However, the Phillips family said they were finally allowed in by the venue just 15 minutes before the show began.

"We had to stand in the bar area, I had to have her on my shoulders, so we did not get our seats that we were promised and a lot of other people," Phillips said.

Thankfully, her daughters said despite not being in their seats, the show was worth seeing.

"It was really good. I liked her songs and she did a good performance," said Aamira Phillips.

A source close to the venue told CBS 58 the show "used Ticketmaster's Face Value Exchange to protect fans and keep resale capped at face value."

"Major resale marketplaces were notified of the artist’s terms yet continued to allow scalpers to sell invalid tickets for profit, which impacted fans at the door," the same source said.

But a spokesperson for StubHub pushed back against those claims.

"We want to be clear that this was not a StubHub issue. From what we’re seeing, the Milwaukee tickets' barcodes were not working across the board, including Ticketmaster itself, who sold tickets directly," the spokesperson told CBS 58.

"Fans at the Freya Skye show in Milwaukee ran into a barcode glitch in the event's ticketing system when they arrived at the door. We're grateful to the venue staff who worked to get people inside. StubHub is making every affected customer whole, and we are working with the venue to get a full account of what happened," a StubHub statement continued.

It is still unclear how many third-party tickets were affected.
