IndyCar racing returns to Milwaukee Mile Speedway this Labor Day weekend
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- This summer, the Cream City is revving its engine, the Milwaukee Mile is gearing up for its first IndyCar race in nearly nine years. It’s a move welcomed by race car enthusiasts across the state.
More than $7.5 million went into getting the Milwaukee Mile track up to speed -- an investment slated to draw a crowd of nearly 30,000 people this Labor Day weekend.
The extreme sport missing from the track since 2015 due to low attendance, is making its return this Labor Day weekend.
"Not only are we hopeful for great weather, of course we are hopeful to have fans in the stands," said Shari Black, CEO of the Wisconsin State Fair Park.
Hamilton said watching from the stands is the best place to watch.
"I tell everybody about Milwaukee, it’s a race that you sit in one seat and see the entire place," said Hamilton
And while sitting in the stands is good view.
CBS 58 suited up and got a firsthand look at the newly minted track going speeds of nearly 160.
"We sustain about 4G's, every time we go through a corner our bodies are taking that 4G load, plus you're out there with 29 other guys trying to pass, and get your car right, and keep it under control, so mentally and physically it’s a challenge," said Hamilton.
The upcoming doubleheader race shifting IndyCar racing out of neutral and back into high gear.
"We are so fortunate to be able to bring it back and give it to all of the patrons here that are big race fans as well as Milwaukee, it means a lot to our area," said Black.
