Suspect arrested following report of armed man driving through Veterans Park, Field of Flags remains intact
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office says a suspect was arrested in Milwaukee's Veterans Park Monday night, May 18, after reports of an armed man driving through the park.
The sheriff's office tells us the 35-year-old suspect driving a black Hummer was ultimately taken into custody by Milwaukee police.
Sheriff's officials say it's believed officers began following the vehicle after observing the suspect driving recklessly on Lincoln Memorial Drive and into the park.
Viewer photos show a large crowd watching the incident unfold on the lakefront.
No one was injured, and the Field of Flags remains intact. "This is the place to do that and really think about those, who again, made the ultimate sacrifice," shared Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Brian Winski, president of the War Memorial Center.
Volunteers this week are placing 27,316 flags, one for each of the Wisconsinites who died in service. Winski says reckless driving needs to stop. "I think it's much a concern as its impact on the entire community. It's just got to be addressed. And again, thank goodness, nobody was hurt, nothing was damaged, none of our American flags were destroyed."
More flags will be placed throughout the week, with a ceremony taking place Friday morning.
The suspect vehicle has been towed. Charges for the suspect are still pending.
