'It made me feel honored': Milwaukee veterans celebrated with flight of a lifetime
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) — On Tuesday, Milwaukee veterans got the experience of a lifetime as they took to the sky as part of a nationwide effort to honor and celebrate their military service.
"I've never flown in a two-seater, it's always been jets," said Larry Harris, Army veteran.
Video footage captured veteran Larry Harris soaring over Milwaukee.
"Up there, it's smooth sailing," said Harris.
"I'm looking at the tachometers take off at 19 rpms. I was paying attention to things," said Harris.
Harris, along with seven other veterans from Luther Manor Senior Living Community, were celebrated for their service.
"It made me feel honored, very honored," said Harris.
Dream Flights honors veterans around the country with the adventure of a lifetime.
“We have our freedoms to thank them. And they’re at a point in their life where they don’t get to do a lot of exciting things. And so it’s like a match made in heaven,” said Harris.
After nearly 8,000 flights with veterans, president and founder of Dream Flights, Darryl Fisher, says his favorite part is hearing their stories.
"It's been profound, because I've had a history lesson like no other. Because I've heard it from the people that were there," said Fisher. "It's given me courage. We are a lot stronger than we think, we can handle a lot more adversity than we think we can."
Fisher says it's more than just a flight; it's a tribute to their courage and a chance to relive history from the sky.
