'It's devastating': Community activist against gun violence shot and killed in Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A day after she was shot and killed, the family of 23-year-old Rosalind Rogers said they won’t rest until her killer is found.
Rogers, a community activist, was killed early Thursday morning near Teutonia and Villard, outside a Mcdonald's.
Those close to her told CBS 58 News she was a woman for change, trying her best to stand up against gun violence in Milwaukee.
It’s a scene all too familiar in the City of Milwaukee, a roadside vigil, remembering the life of a victim of gun violence.
"Slain in the middle of these streets to gun violence, someone who wanted to make a change about gun violence, it's devastating," said Shirley Casey, a friend to Rogers.
Friday, Rogers' family and friends were back on the scene looking for answers to her murder.
"So, we can understand who it was, and why, what took place so bad that made ya'll want to kill an innocent woman like this," said Casey.
Those close to Rogers said she was a woman of justice, trying to uplift Milwaukee's youth.
"To see someone like Roz lose her life to gun violence is really a wakeup call, it should be a wakeup call for the community," said Caliph Muab'EL, executive director for Breaking Barriers Mentoring, a program aimed at violence prevention.
Most recently, Rogers became a certified mentor at Breaking Barriers Mentoring.
"Her heart and soul was in the community and mentoring and activism and fighting for the rights of people that was at the forefront of her mission," said Muab'EL.
A mission Rogers friends, and family said they hope continues.
"Put the guns down, put the guns down and have a brighter future for these children out here," said Casey.
Police are still looking for unknown suspects, anyone with information is asked to contact the Milwaukee Police Department.
A march for Rogers is scheduled for Friday night at 6:00 p.m. near Hopkins and Hamptons. People are encouraged to wear rainbow colors.
