Juneteenth Day Parade and festival canceled; Freedom Ball planned for later this year
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Juneteenth Day Parade and Street Festival has been added to a growing list of canceled events due to the coronavirus crisis.
The event had been scheduled for June 19 at Rose Park.
Instead, the Northcott Neighborhood House and Juneteenth Day Executive Committee is planning a Freedom Ball to take place later this year -- sometime between October and December, according to a post shared to their social media page.
The event will also kick off major fundraising for the 50th Annual Juneteenth Day Celebration in 2021.
Organizers say while this year's festival will not take place, Juneteenth Day scholarships for local youth will still be given out.
They say criteria for scholarships are the same as in the past for Little Miss Juneteenth (ages 7-13) and Miss Juneteenth (ages 14-18). New this year will be eight scholarships for young men (ages 7-14 and 14-18).
At the Freedom Ball, the young men will escort the Little Miss/Miss Juneteenth courts as all of them are recognized and presented with scholarships.
Juneteenth Day Scholarship information will be made available in the coming weeks via social media.
