Jury process underway in Milwaukee County Judge Dugan's federal case

NOW: Jury process underway in Milwaukee County Judge Dugan’s federal case

MILWAUKEE COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee County judge at the center of a federal case, as a defendant, had another hearing on Thursday, Nov. 6.

Milwaukee County Circuit Judge Hannah Dugan is facing federal criminal charges for allegedly helping an undocumented immigrant evade immigration agents in April.

In court Thursday, lawyers were discussing how to move forward with a jury.

They said 120 questionnaires have been sent out, and they've gotten nearly all back.

Both sides say they see 34 as potential strikes and have agreed to send 50 more out.

The prosecuting attorneys said they are in, "pretty decent shape in terms of jurors."

Forward Latino President Darryl Morin was at the hearing and said the case is about more than Judge Dugan.

"We're very concerned by the events that took place here in Milwaukee County and have a very vested interest in the separation of powers remain in place as a cornerstone of our entire democracy," said Morrin.

A final pre-trial will take place the day before Thanksgiving, and Dugan's trial is set to start on Dec. 11.

Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, the immigrant allegedly who Dugan is accused of helping, was sentenced to time served on Wednesday, Nov. 5. He will now be deported to Mexico.
