Kansas police chief tells CBS 58 juvenile arrested, believed to be connected to Wisconsin double homicide
WAKEENEY, Kan. (CBS 58) -- After a Wisconsin juvenile was taken into custody in WaKeeney, Kansas, WaKeeney Police Chief Michael Romero says his department has been in constant communication with law enforcement across state lines to try to figure out what happened.
According to the WaKeeney Police Department, they stopped a vehicle that ran a stop sign on Saturday, March 1. The vehicle came back as stolen from Wisconsin.
WaKeeney police say that the juvenile in the vehicle is a person of interest in a double homicide that a Wisconsin sheriff's office is still investigating.
“We have been on the phone with each other every day and have been speaking to each other and having a game plan put in place," said Romero, in reference to his conversations with law enforcement in Wisconsin.
WaKeeney police did not say where or when exactly the homicide took place in Wisconsin. However, this arrest in Kansas came after two people were found dead inside a home in Waukesha.
Judith Mayer says she started to become concerned when two weeks passed, and she still was getting no response from her son and his wife. Then, she got a call from Waukesha West High School Friday, saying her grandson hadn't been to school in two weeks. She called the police to investigate and that night she said her worst fears came true, her son and daughter-in-law were dead.
"When they called back and said that they were both deceased, that was when it hit us," said Mayer. "All hope was gone, and I lost my son."
Just like Mayer, neighbors say they hadn't seen the family in two weeks.
"We just thought they were on vacation," said neighbor, Kim Vonckx. "Their garbage wasn’t being put out, the snow that one day wasn’t being shoveled."
The new developments in this case are leaving neighbors uneasy and full of questions.
"We don’t know a lot of what's going on," said Vonckx. "Is it just a suicide? Is it a murder? Who knows what happened?"
Waukesha County property tax records show the home at the center of the investigation belongs to Donald Meyer and Tatiana Casap.
WaKeeney police say the juvenile is being held in a juvenile detention center and is awaiting extradition.
The investigation is ongoing.
