MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- As the back-to-school season approaches, doctors are stressing the importance of students' mental well-being alongside their academic readiness. Pediatricians say that a child’s mental health is crucial for them to successfully engage in school, play with friends and participate in activities.
Dr. Megan Yanny, a pediatrician at UW Health Kids, advises families to focus on establishing back-to-school routines and checking in with children about their feelings.
"I think parents can check in with their kids now," Yanny said. "Check in with their teacher, make sure they have a plan for communicating if any issues come up during the school year and prepare your kids for what to expect at school. Kids love routine."
Dr. Yanny also suggests that parents conduct a dry run of the first day of school to help students know what to expect.
"Talk through what’s gonna happen during that day," she added.
Emphasized that practicing good mental health habits now can lead to success in adulthood, according to Dr. Yanny. She advised parents to be alert for sudden changes in their child’s behavior, such as headaches, stomachaches, withdrawal from usual activities, or significant changes in grades.
If concerns arise, parents are encouraged to consult their physician for additional support.
