LaFleur breaks down Packers loss
GREEN BAY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- There was a bit of Murphy's Law in action during the Packers' loss to the Giants Monday night. Anything that could go wrong, did go wrong, as the offense, defense and special teams units all had major problems.
Quarterback Jordan Love turned the ball over twice, special teams had a couple of costly penalties, a missed kick and a botched punt return. But down the stretch it was the defense that fell apart.
Leading by one, the Packers sat back in a deep coverage and watched as undrafted, rookie quarterback Tommy DeVito picked them apart play after play. The defense struggled even more against the run, allowing more than 200 rushing yards at a clip of more than six yards per carry.
"I mean obviously you take a long, hard look at the film, and that was a tough watch in every phase," coach Matt LaFleur said Monday afternoon. "Joe (defensive coordinator Joe Berry) called man coverage and we're playing way off, which we shouldn't be in that situation. You can't be peaking in the backfield, you got to keep your eyes on your work and unfortunately, we didn't. We got gashed and that ultimately did us in."
There were a few positives from the game, too. LaFleur was happy with how Love played at the end of the game, leading a go-ahead touchdown drive after struggling early.
"That speaks to the character of Jordan Love in terms of his mindset and what he's all about. There was a point in time where he said, 'screw it. I'm going to go out there and play decisively,' and I think he played much, much better. You are going to make mistakes in this game, it's about how do you respond from them."
