Lawmakers hear testimony on gun storage bill, tax credits for teachers

MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A bipartisan bill that aims to secure more firearms was praised by state lawmakers and advocates Tuesday.
During a public hearing in Madison, many spoke in favor of the proposal that would make gun safes exempt from Wisconsin's sales tax.
The proposal aims to promote secure storage of firearms, which advocates say would address safety concerns.
"We know secure gun storage can help save lives. When someone is experiencing a mental health crisis, trigger locks and gun safes put time and space between that person and a gun," said Heather Haas, volunteer with Moms Demand Action.
Governor Tony Evers has included a similar proposal in his 2025-2027 state budget for removing the sales tax from gun safe purchases. He also included the provision in his 2023-2025 state budget, but GOP lawmakers removed it.
Also Tuesday, lawmakers debated another tax related proposal designed to help teachers.
The bill would give teachers a $300 tax credit to help cover the cost of classroom supplies or additional training. It would mirror a federal tax deduction teachers can claim.
"This would double the potential benefit and make teachers significantly closer to being made whole," said State Rep. Dave Armstrong (R-Rice Lake).
The bill has received bipartisan support.
