Light wintry mix Monday won't save our dwindling white Christmas chances

NOW: Light wintry mix Monday won’t save our dwindling white Christmas chances

Some light wintry mix has been falling in some communities Monday morning. Some areas have seen a few snowflakes and flurries while others have seen some freezing drizzle or light sleet. The light mix could continue in some fashion through the rest of the morning hours, then temps warm enough where any afternoon precipitation should come in the form of rain showers or drizzle.

Here is a radar image that will update with time:

After Monday's light mix, Tuesday looks to stay all dry under a mix of sun and clouds. Then we get to Christmas Eve on Wednesday which could see some sprinkles. Christmas Day has trended fairly dry but some rain or mix might be possible at night with a better chance for mix on Friday.

After a roller coaster of temps the last few days with highs ranging from the 20s to 40s we stay steady for most of the week of Christmas. Highs will hang out in the 40s from Monday through Saturday. Average highs are usually in the mid 30s so it's much warmer than average for the holiday. Christmas Day still looks mild but the trend is for temps to drop so don't be surprised if we need to drop the temp there a few more degrees.

At the beginning of December it looked like our chance at a white Christmas was a virtual lock, in fact it even got up to 70%. But with all of the slush from two weeks ago then a few days in the 40s last week and more rain our snow depth in Milwaukee is now officially at 0". There is some snow the farther west and north you go with about an inch on the ground in Madison and 2" in Green Bay. More snow is on the ground in central and northern Wisconsin but even they have seen a lot of melting recently.

The combination of no snow on the ground, consistent mild temps, and no good snow chances in the forecast means that our White Christmas chance in Milwaukee is now at a dismal 5%. Some of our northern counties have a better chance for a white Christmas where they had a deeper snow pack.
