Lincoln Avenue School to be demolished due to extent of fire damage, MPS says

CBS 58

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) --- The City of Milwaukee will begin the process of tearing down Lincoln Avenue School after a massive fire caused extensive damage in the early morning hours of June 30.

Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) shared the update with staff and families of students who attend the elementary school Friday, asking that the public stay away from the property as the city works to select a contractor and begin demolition.

The district says they plan to keep the Lincoln Avenue community together at a single location for the upcoming school year.

Virtual meetings will be held for staff and families Wednesday, July 8, and Thursday, July 9, to ensure all voices are heard as plans are finalized.

Community-wide meetings have also been planned for Monday, July 13, at 9 a.m. and Tuesday, July 14, at 5:30 p.m. Both will take place in person at Rogers Street Academy Boys and Girls Club. MPS says a livestream will be made available.

MPS says they are accepting monetary donations as well as donated school supplies.

Items can be dropped off at MPS Central Services -- 5225 W. Vliet Street, Room 142 -- Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
