Loved ones gather in honor of baby killed in stolen car crash
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Family and friends of a baby killed in a stolen car crash returned to the scene Tuesday night to release balloons in his honor.
The broken-hearted huddled together at the corner of 35th and Hope Avenue. Chilly temps kept them a little closer as they remembered 13-month-old Zarion Robinson.
"He happy, very happy. I mean he bring up joy. He bring like light to the family. That's why everybody out here, you know," said Donnie Thomas, Zarion's grandfather.
Supporters were asked to wear the color blue, but under thick jackets it was hard to tell.
"I stood on the street, just came out here to support the family," said Casey Singleton, friend.
What we did see was an incredible show of love and support as balloons were launched and prayers were said.
"You know, that hurts. So this right here brought everybody together, really," said Donnie.
It's Donnie Thomas' daughter who left her 13-month-old baby boy in his car seat Friday night as she ran inside her home for a quick minute.
Police have arrested the 31-year-old woman who jumped in the car and stole it, crashing it at 35th and Hope. The baby died a few hours later at Children's Wisconsin.
The medical examiner's report says a mostly consumed bottle of brandy was sitting on the rear passenger seat.
"At the end of the day, you know, we all make mistakes, but this wasn't no mistake right here," said Donnie.
Zarion's mom attended the balloon release but had no words when the tribute ended.
"She too much, don't want to talk about anything. She don't. I mean it's hurting her," Donnie said.
