Madison police still investigating motive behind deadly shooting at Abundant Life Christian School
MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Police still do not know the motive behind the horrific shooting last month at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, Wisconsin, that killed three -- including the suspect -- and injured six others.
On Thursday, Jan. 9, Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes released a short video update on where officials are in the lengthy investigation.
According to Barnes, his team is working diligently daily to analyze each piece of evidence.
The suspect, 15-year-old student Natalie Rupnow, was "very active online" so officials are combing through her social media posts and platforms.
However, that alone is adding significant time to the investigation, as police have to request search warrants and subpoenas for that online evidence, which could result in tens of thousands of pages.
Barnes added that his team is also investigating a document that's been circulating online, but at this time cannot be commented on or verified on its authenticity.
"I know that many of you are eager to know the motivation behind this horrific event. However, I must emphasize that determining a motive is often a complex and challenging process," Barnes said.
He did confirm though, that there is no credible evidence that others are planning to commit further violence.
Police also found 21 shell casings and collected two firearms from the scene, although it was determined only one was used. They are not naming where the guns were purchased and did not clarify when that will be made public.
Barnes noted that it could be several more weeks or even months until charging decisions are made.
UW Health recently said the two students who were being treated for life-threatening injuries are now in fair condition.
