WAUKESHA COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A Milwaukee man is charged with driving on the wrong side of I-94 on Christmas Day.

Forty-two-year-old Samuel Moran Soza was charged with second degree recklessly endangering safety.

According to a criminal complaint, a Waukesha County Sheriff's Department deputy was advised of a wrong way driver, operating a dark colored SUV, via radio on I-94 in Jefferson County. The Delafield Police Department told them the suspect vehicle passed them over 100 mph in the wrong lanes of traffic.

The deputy saw the vehicle in Delafield, turned on his siren, and attempted to pull the SUV over.  The complaint says the SUV did not decrease its speed and disregarded the emergency lights and siren. The deputy positioned his squad in between the lanes of westbound I-94 in attempt to get the vehicle to pull over. The deputy said the suspect did not slow down and continued to swerve towards the median to go around the squad. Per complaint, the officer said the vehicle almost hit him head on.

The deputy then did a U-turn, trying to catch up with the suspect. The deputy managed to catch up to the SUV, according to the complaint. The suspect came to a stop once the deputy caught up to him in the westbound lanes of I-94, just west of State Highway 83 in the City of Delafield. The vehicle was still in the wrong lane, per complaint.

The complaint says the deputy identified the vehicle operator as Moran Soza. The deputy observed that there were five adults and two infants in car seats in the vehicle, per complaint. The deputy said he was unable to communicate with anyone in the vehicle, as they all spoke Spanish.

An officer with the Wisconsin State Patrol arrived and was able to speak Spanish and speak with them. According to the complaint, Moran Soza. said he was heading home to Milwaukee from Johnson Creek. The officer said he could smell the odor of intoxicating beverages. Moran Soza told police he had two beers. When the officer told him he was going on the wrong way of the freeway, he seemed surprised, per complaint. Moran Soza said the GPS on his phone told him to go the way he went, and said he did not know the area well.

Per complaint, Moran Soza was placed through field sobriety tests but was determined not to be impaired. His PBT was 0.017.

The complaint says, in total, Moran Soza traveled around 11 miles on I-94 going the wrong way.
