Mayor Cavalier Johnson: 'Milwaukee has accomplished one of my top goals'

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- There are mixed reviews about how successful the Republican National Convention has been for Milwaukee. While some businesses inside the perimeter of the convention are seeing the crowds, places like Brady Street and Milwaukee's Third Ward are not.

Mayor Cavalier Johnson has been giving daily updates on the state of Milwaukee with RNC in town. Thursday morning, July 18, was his final update.

"Milwaukee has accomplished one of my top goals," said Mayor Johnson. "We've demonstrated our ability to host a major and massive event. That's important to the tens-of-thousands of visitors, and it's important to the future of our hospitality industry right here in Milwaukee."

The mayor called this week smooth, overall. He says there were only minor disturbances overnight that resulted in arrests for disorderly conduct.

As for the economic impact of the convention, Mayor Johnson says we will have to wait and see how well it did.

"The conventiongoers that I've had the chance to speak to, have shared some very, very positive impressions of Milwaukee," he said. "A number of them said they plan to come back to visit Milwaukee, and that is really music to my ears. For thousands of people who think about Wisconsin, their first impression is going to be Milwaukee, and I think that's a really good thing."
