MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee is getting closer to its goal of adopting more renewable energy to power the city.
On Monday, March 25, Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson signed an agreement to build new solar panels both in Milwaukee and in Racine County.
The agreement, made with We Energies, is all part of the city's "25 by 2025 plan," which looks to generate 25% of its power needs for city operations by 2025.
Mayor Johnson says the investment will cover critical services used by both the city and the public.
"Ten megawatts, that's enough energy to cover 100% of the...electricity power needed for 84 city buildings, including all of our police stations in Milwaukee, all of our fire stations, all of our libraries as well as port buildings and more," said Mayor Johnson.
With the signing of the agreement, the city also pledges to work to source 100% of municipal power needs from renewables by 2023.
