Milaeger's prepares for Spring Open House with thousands of flowers in 92 greenhouses
RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The greenhouses at Milaeger's are blooming at bright for the Spring Open House coming Thursday, April 24.
"We’ve got all of our perennials out, all of our nurseries stocked, all of the roses, the greenhouses are filled and ready for purchase," said Kara Kading, the director of Marketing.
The nursery needs constant attention and water, and the work starts long before the warmer months.
"Believe it or not we’re starting in January and February. There’s a lot going on behind the scenes and there’s a lot of plants and crops that grow a lot slower," said Kading.
Milaeger's is the biggest nursery in the Midwest with thousands of varieties to choose from.
"We’re always expanding. We’re always offering different selections. There are about 1,200 different varieties of perennials we’re growing right now -- over 2,000 different annuals, we’ve got over 100 different kinds of tomatoes over 60 peppers. We get a lot of variety here and that’s why people love coming because they’re always going to find something different and unique," said Kading.
All 92 nurseries at the Douglas Ave location are open to the public seven days a week. You can also find other vendors with locally grown produce and more at the Great Lakes Farmer's Market every Sunday.
