Milwaukee Brewers support hometown business after street vendor harassed earlier this month

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Brewers showed their support for a hometown business after a street vendor was attacked earlier this month.

Free paletas, or popsicles, were given out to kids on the south side of Milwaukee with a little help from Bernie Brewer.

The giveaway came after a video was posted to social media showing a street vendor being harassed during a Cinco De Mayo celebration.

The action sparked outrage on social media.

"Shame, you know anger because I don’t like when you see things like this happen, especially to one of your employees. It's not nice, it doesn't feel good," said Rene Adan, Co-Owner, Paleteria Yayo.

Adan went on to say it was his employee who was harassed.

"This is not a one-time incident, this happens every day, every week, not every day but every week, and it's been happening since I've been in this business," said Adan.

The now-viral video prompted some heavy hitters to show their support.

"I was scrolling through Facebook on an off day and found out about the unfortunate attack on a paletero," said Izzy Lugo, Director of Experiential Marketing, Milwaukee Brewers.

The baseball organization said they hope events like this will help a community come together.

"If they start to grow up knowing these are valued members of the community, its less and less likely that unfortunate attacks happen," said Lugo.

"It feels nice to hear a lot of good things from the people out there, and what can I say just thank you, thanks," said Adan.

There is a hotline available to street vendors should they need help or support, that number is 414-539-1036.
