MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Here in Milwaukee, they had a celebration like we've never seen before at Milwaukee Area Technical College today.
It was inside the school, complete with special effects for a special group of athletes.
A drumline led members of the MATC Stormers basketball team into a rally this morning. A celebration of the team's first national championship.
The Stormers won the National Junior College Division II championship in late March, and the trophy and net were on display today.
There were special guests at the rally, including Bucks mascot Bango and Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley.
"This provides an opportunity for us to recruit more players, but also to recruit academic talent as well, because we know that basketball teams can help provide that innovation and also that encouragement for students to apply," said Crowley.
Mayor Cavalier Johnson and Congresswoman Gwen Moore sent videotaped messages recognizing the champs.
And here's something for you bracket-fillers -- MATC was a 7-seed in the tournament, so the Stormers became the highest seed ever to win it all at their level.
