Milwaukee celebrates National Voter Registration Day
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- With less than two months until the November election, officials are getting creative in ways they can help people register to vote.
"I just think it's important to vote, I really do," said registered voter Veronica Robinson. "You can't sit back and complain and not vote. You know, if you vote, things happen when you vote. Change, rather good or bad, but change happens when you vote."
The Milwaukee County Commission held events at the Milwaukee County Courthouse and American Family Field on Tuesday, celebrating National Voter Registration Day by helping residents with voter registration and education.
"It makes a very big difference if you come together as one and vote," said registered voter Deshawn Alexander. "It makes a difference for the youth growing up too, as well."
Milwaukee County Elections Director Michelle Hawley says as of Tuesday, there are more than 503,000 registered voters in the county. That's 10,000 new voters since the primary election in August.
"We talked about the election, the presidential election," said Hawley. "There is a lot of other things going on that ballot. We have Assembly seats - every single Assembly seat - the even number Senate seats, federal Senate seat, and in Milwaukee County, we have 10 school boards that have referendum questions."
Registered voter Veronica Robinson says she is passionate about having her voice heard and is going the extra mile to help others do the same.
"I have a granddaughter who just turned 19, so I just got her registered too," said Robinson.
Helping everyone get ready for the polls, because every vote matters.
The last day you can register to vote online is Oct. 16, but you can still register to vote in person. If you are last-minute, you can even register on Election Day, on Nov. 5, at the polls in Wisconsin.
