Milwaukee Co. workers, MCTS riders no longer need masks as COVID-19 risk level moves to 'low'

MILWAUKE COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The CDC has lowered Milwaukee County's COVID-19 community risk level to "low." In response, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley announced updated masking and capacity requirements for county employees. 

According to a news release from Crowley's office, effective Friday, Feb. 17, masking and capacity requirements will move to the “low” level, as outlined in the attached tables. Masking will no longer be required at the Milwaukee County Courthouse complex for employees and for all visitors.

The Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) is also no longer requiring masks for bus passengers or operators.

The county will continue masking requirements in higher-risk locations out of a recognition that these locations serve an often vulnerable and high-risk population. All employees, contractors, volunteers, and visitors will still be required to mask in the following circumstances:

• While at work in high-risk facilities (Jail, Community Reintegration Center, Juvenile Detention Center, Behavioral Health Clinical Settings); and/or
• While in public spaces and/or when interacting with members of the public within the Marcia Coggs Center.

Additionally, masking is required at other county facilities if an employee, contractor or volunteer has been exposed to COVID-19 within the past 10 days and is eligible to return to in-person work.

While capacity guidelines primarily focus on Milwaukee County facilities serving vulnerable populations and providing essential services, all Milwaukee County departments should implement these guidelines as appropriate in their respective environments. Updates tied to “low” classification include:

• Follow departmental guidelines for in-person and telework options
• Ensure the availability of high-quality masks (N95 and KN95)
• Maintain improved ventilation throughout public and private indoor spaces when possible
