77-year-old man killed in Greenfield apartment fire

GREENFIELD, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A 77-year-old man has died following an apartment fire in Greenfield Tuesday, Jan. 16. 

Crews responded to the scene near Colony and Layton around 10:21 a.m. 

Units discovered a fire in an apartment on the first floor of a two-story apartment building. 

Greenfield police units arrived first and removed the lone occupant from the apartment that was on fire. One of the officers helped extinguish the fire and another began CPR on the victim was then transferred to paramedics. 

Officials say despite lifesaving efforts, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. 

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Circumstances are not believed to be suspicious. 

The fire department says the unit involved did have working smoke detectors. 

A 27-year-old Greenfield officer with over five years of experience was taken to an area hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and released.
