MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The legacy and work of a prominent Milwaukee doctor, Dr. William Finlayson, was honored during a street renaming ceremony on Tuesday, Aug. 8.

The pioneer doctor was honored for his nearly 40 years of service as a beloved obstetrician, gynecologist, and businessman. The 98-year-old doctor is said to have delivered more than 10,000 babies throughout his storied career.

"We are thankful that he is able to be present with us today, to be recognized, and to witness his legacy being cemented for future generations to come," said Al Smith with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. Milwaukee.

The 98-year-old doctor is said to have delivered more than 10,000 babies throughout his storied career, some of whom attended Tuesday's ceremony.

"Dr. Finlayson, he deserves all the honor" said Diane Blalock, a woman who was delivered by Finlayson back in 1955.

The street was renamed at the intersection of 5th and North Ave.

The new street name will run from West Capitol Drive to West Walnut Street. City leaders said they are hopeful this street will inspire a future generation of trailblazers.

"Hopefully they'll look up Dr. Finlayson, and see some of the great works and great service that he's done for the city of Milwaukee and be inspired in their own way to be of service to the city as well," said Milwaukee Alderwoman, Milele Coggs of District 6.

The unveiling of the sign was part of Bronzeville Week, which goes until Aug. 12.
