Milwaukee food truck owners experience extreme heat in trucks
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The extreme heat continues to hit the area hard, and it's not making it easy for food trucks to stay open for business as usual.
"One-ten, 115, yeah, it’s the hottest," said Ivan Rubio, the owner of SapSap food truck.
Extreme heat outside is turning into blazing temperatures inside of local food trucks. Rubio says the temperatures inside of his food truck have reached up to 115 degrees.
"We have the stove on, we have the fryer on, so it’s just one of those things where it’s just so hot," said Lupe Moreno, owner of Cocina Filipina and Modern Maki sushi food trucks. "Just extra hot on the truck, and you know, what can you do?"
Moreno and Rubio both have had to close their trucks because of the heat this week.
"It's hot, so, so hot we decided to close," said Rubio.
"If we cancel, then you know, we’re not making any money for the day," said Moreno.
Moreno says closing and missing events can cause them to lose out on thousands of dollars, so they do the best they can to brave the heat.
"We just can’t afford to close these days, you know?" said Moreno.
With more temperatures in the 90s to come this week, employee safety is top of mind.
"I don’t want anyone to pass out or get sick or anything," said Moreno.
Keeping employees and certain foods cool is no easy task.
"It’s hard to do that when you have a specific certain type of generator," said Moreno. "So unfortunately, we’re open, but come check us out anyways, because you know, we’re out here suffering in the hot."
With the World Cup, festivals and other events, food truck owners say summer is when they get the most income.
So as long as people keep coming, they say they will do what they can to keep their doors open.
