MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee Jewish Day School has been dubbed as a heart safe school by the initiative Project ADAM.
Project ADAM was founded in 1999 after Adam Lemel died of a heart attack at 17-years-old. Lemel's father, Joe Lemel, said his son was an alum of Milwaukee Jewish Day School.
"After Adam died I learned that there could've been a way to save him or at least give him a chance to be saved," said Lemel.
A chance Lemel wants to give others. Milwaukee Jewish Day School has been working with Project ADAM, Children's Hospital and the North Shore Fire Department to become a heart safe school.
A group of fifth graders are CPR certified, and the school assembled an emergency response group filled with staff.
"The kids are trained in this school as a fifth grader how to start CPR, how to call 911 and they know where to get the AED," said Lemel.
