MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- For more than a year, Wisconsin law has required Milwaukee Public Schools to reinstate at least 25 school resource officers by 2025.
But we're now more than three weeks into the new year, with still no sign.
On Thursday morning, legal representatives for the Milwaukee Board of School Directors and attorneys for an MPS mother of six met for a motion hearing in front of Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge David Borowski.
The lawsuit was filed last October by the Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty -- a nonprofit conservative law firm based in Milwaukee, after that district parent voiced concerns about a dangerous fight club and the safety of her children.
After deliberating for hours, Judge Borowski ordered the board to comply with the law and place those required officers in schools by Feb. 17.
"This violation of the law has gone on for over a year and it is my intent to end it and end it immediately," Judge Borowski said, while also granting the defense's request to join the City of Milwaukee as a party to the lawsuit. "If not a completely indispensable party, it's my belief that they are certainly a necessary party to the realistic resolution to this case."
Judge Borowski said if those resource officers are not in place by the morning of Feb. 17, another hearing with the school board and the city will be held later that afternoon.
