Milwaukee lawmaker had Capitol access 'inappropriately revoked'

CBS 58

MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- In an unusual story from Madison, it turns out a state lawmaker from Milwaukee is not banned from the state Capitol.

Representative Sylvia Ortiz-Velez has told multiple outlets she had her access to the Capitol revoked over a perceived threat following comments she made to some of her colleagues.

Ortiz-Velez, a Milwaukee Democrat, is in her third term in the Assembly.

In recent months, there has been friction between her and other Democrats, and a spokesperson for Minority Leader Greta Neubauer tells us Ortiz-Velez has left the Democratic caucus.

As for her access, a spokesperson for Assembly Speaker Robin Vos said, "Her access was inappropriately revoked. No one from the Assembly is currently barred from the Capitol."

We left multiple messages with Ortiz-Velez Thursday, but she has not responded.
