MILWAUKEE (CBS58) - A Milwaukee man is warning others to be vigilant of their surroundings after being shot at during an attempted carjacking.
Evan Muschinske was going through the intersection of 92nd and Center early Saturday morning around 2:30 a.m. when Muschinske noticed five kids approaching his vehicle. Muschinske says he started to drive away quickly and that’s when he heard the gunshots.
“I just thought, I thought he was banging on the car. Like I thought he got behind the car and just went, you know,” said Muschinske. “Turns out, I checked to see what he hit and turns out, he shot it.”
Ald. Lamont Westmoreland serves Muschinske’s district. He says there have been at least five incidents of violent carjackings in district 5.
“I think some of these idiots are turning to...we can’t take them. We can’t break into them and steal them when the keys aren’t there, so we’re going to turn to people that are not paying attention. People, people that have their guards down and we’re gonna take the vehicle, take them out of the vehicle and take it from them,” said Westmoreland.
It’s not the only district facing this problem. Citywide, carjackings are up 35% this year, according to the Milwaukee Police Department.
Westmoreland and Muschinske both say if you’re in your car, be aware of your surroundings.
