Milwaukee police Flock portal goes live: See how many license plates are searched
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) has launched a new transparency portal giving the public greater insight into the department's use of Flock technology, which is an Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) tool.Â
The transparency portal, per MPD, provides the public with real-time insights into MPD's Flock ALPR network.Â
The dashboard is designed to address common questions MPD has received and provide the public greater visibility into the use of the technology.Â
The news comes after Racine and Fond du Lac counties opted to end their use of Flock cameras, effective immediately.Â

Recent mistakes and misconduct have thrown a spotlight on privacy and safety issues.
Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson announced the dashboard Monday, August 31. It was one of several changes he made, with input from the police department, to the city's Flock technology regulations.
At the time, Johnson told us, "We've been monitoring this, watching this, the whole way. But these issues continue to happen."
In addition to the public dashboard, Johnson called for:
- Further restrict Flock data access to supervisors only, with no officers or detectives permitted access;
- Limit camera use to Part I crimes, critical missing persons, drug trafficking investigations and abductions;
- Further restrict access to Milwaukee's Flock data to MPD only, ending data sharing with other jurisdictions;
- Conduct semiannual independent audits through the Fire and Police Commission, with results shared with his office and the public;
- Continue ongoing monitoring from his office
