MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) – An investigation is ongoing after a woman was hit by an SUV, and then her body was hit again by a police squad car.

It happened just after 2:30 a.m. Saturday on Milwaukee's north side, at North Avenue and 14th Street.

Fifty-seven-year-old Carla Tyson died at the scene.

"I really want to get to the bottom of what happened to my sister," said her brother, Pierre Tyson.

He visited a roadside memorial for his sister for the first time Wednesday.

"We definitely want whoever's responsible in whatever capacity to be held accountable for their actions and do the right thing," he said.

The Milwaukee Police Department said two officers were in the car on their way to a different call, when they hit Tyson's body in the road.

"It was pitch black out here, like everything was off out here, it was really dark," said Tim Clements, who lives nearby.

Clements said he watched Tyson get hit by both cars, just 15 to 20 seconds apart.

"I kept praying, I kept praying, I kept praying, I said please don't let this woman die right here," he recalled.

Tyson's brother said he hasn't gotten a lot of information from police, and the family plans to conduct their own investigation.

"I'm just glad that there were a lot of eye witnesses out here that seen what happened," he said.

The family remembers Carla as a fighter, despite struggling with physical disabilities and homelessness.

"She's been through so much from the time that she was born, and she never gave up. Never, never, never," said her mother, Lois Harris.

They're planning a memorial service for her in Kenosha, where the family is from.

"After that, it's all about just getting to the task of finding out what happened to her and getting some closure," Pierre Tyson said.

The Milwaukee Police Homicide Unit is investigating. They said they're looking for an unknown driver and a black SUV.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Milwaukee police at (414) 935-7360 or anonymously contact Crime Stoppers at (414) 224-TIPS or via the P3 Tips app.
