MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Two Milwaukee police officers shot two dogs Monday, May 25, after they say one of them bit an officer responding to a call for loose animals near 106th and Bender.

The police department says an officer was attempting to snare one of two loose dogs just before 2 p.m. when the dog bit the officer.

Anthony Butze found the dogs by the side of a road earlier in the day. He told us, "I don’t understand how things progressed this far."

Butze had the dogs in his work truck near 106th and Bender with the windows down.

But when a neighbor complained, they agreed to hold the dogs in her backyard while Butze worked a few doors down.

Tristan Hunter was next door. He told us he saw "two vicious dogs. Guy brought it here and left it."

Hunter added, "Anybody that came near the gate, there's attacking, there's jumping, there's barking. Very aggressively."

While Butze was away, one of the dogs became aggressive with the neighbor.

Butze said, "I knew, because the woman had gotten nipped in the stomach, the right thing to do was to call the police or humane society."

MPD confirmed an officer tried to snare one of the dogs, which then bit the officer.

Hunter said, "Dog jumped, grab his left arm. Had a nice grip on it."

Two officers shot the two dogs.

One of the dogs tried to run after it was shot, leaving a trail of blood in the street.

Crews were still washing the blood off the street a block away.

As they did, Butze explained how he got the dogs in the first place. He said, "I picked up some dogs off the side of the highway that someone threw out."

He said it was 6 a.m. Monday morning, out in Washington County.

He said they acted scared and skittish. He believes they were abused. But still, "I didn’t have a problem with them. Took them home brought them around kids, didn’t have a problem with them."

He said the dogs jumped on him and licked him.

Hunter said Butze introduced the dogs to him to help them acclimate. "They seemed like they were cool. They were cool with him, you know, but anybody else they would just go crazy."

Butze was just trying to help the dogs. "I wish everyone the best but this is one of my worst days."

He pointed to the blood in the street as he said, "This is the dog that jumped on me and licked me."

MPD said the 51-year-old officer who was bitten was taken to an area hospital for treatment of non-fatal injuries.

Police say both dogs were also taken to receive medical treatment.
