MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The City of Milwaukee is coordinating a community initiative to keep neighborhoods clean.

Project Clean and Green kicks off April 21. It encourages community members to properly dispose of their unwanted items. Things like furniture, yard debris, and other bulky household items can be added to trash collection and DPW crews will pick it up for free during the designated days and times.

Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson announced the initiative, along with DPW Commissioner Jerrel Kruschke, on Wednesday near Hanson Street. Collection will begin in this area next week. From April 21 to June 2, eligible properties can dispose of six cubic yards of bulky items or extra trash.

"That's roughly the size of three sofas or a pickup truck bed filled to the height of the cab. Items should be placed at your regular garbage collection points by 7 a.m. on your scheduled day," Kruschke said.

DPW crews will target one zone per week for pickup, giving people the chance to clean out their homes and debris from their yards. "Our sanitation crews will operate additional equipment during this timeframe," said Kruschke.

The program does not apply to businesses or larger apartment complexes. Officials hope that coordinating these efforts helps reduce other city issues like illegal dumping.

"A cleaner city is a healthier city, a safer city, a more welcoming city for all," said Mayor Johnson. There are certain items that DPW will not pick up, like electronics and tires.
