MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Last month's murder of 5-year-old Prince McCree in Milwaukee has prompted a call for change in the way missing children are reported to the public.

It comes from Milwaukee State Senator LaTonya Johnson.

She points out that when McCree disappeared, police issued a critical missing alert, but not an Amber Alert, because there was no description of a suspect or a vehicle.

Amber Alerts can be a lot more effective because they go directly to cell phones and reach a lot more people.

"The majority of your missing children are not gonna have a suspect associated with them. The police aren't even gonna know why or how they came up missing," said Johnson.

Amber alerts are a federal system.

Senator Johnson is calling for a similar system at the local level, one that automatically pings cell phones and doesn't necessarily require a suspect of vehicle description.
