MILWAUKEE (CBS58) -- Sunday is the unofficial start of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, but after the news broke of Former President Donald Trump's attempted assassination, how is the public feeling?

"It's scarier today than it was yesterday. After we got the news we came back down here, and it was different," said Tim Hawkins, a visitor in town for the RNC.

As media and staff filed in Fiserv Forum, RNC volunteer, Becky Hawkins says downtown Milwaukee will be one of the safest places to be in the city.

"I feel safe still. I even feel a little safer after last night," Hawkins explained.

Thousands of police and military members from around the state and the country are coming to help ramp up security at the RNC.

"After yesterday's events, I think everyone is going to be more vigilant in their assignments and their details and I think people are on edge anytime something like that happens it's going to make people feel uneasy and nervous," said Anthony Scott, Captain of the Indiana State Police.

As of Sunday, Scott has not received word on any changes to their security duties.

"We are actually going through our assignments right now before the event starts. We feel confident in our responsibilities here and we are going to do our best to keep everybody safe while we are here," said Scott.

Lynn Quirk lives in the perimeter and says she's excited the city finally gets to have its convention.

"Everybody was quite nervous knowing this was a crazy election again what could happen and has happened now," said Quirk.

She also says her neighbors have left for the week, concerned for their safety.
