Milwaukee's Baird Center hosts trade show highlighting specialty toy industry

CBS 58

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Imagine Milwaukee's Baird Center downtown filled with toys. That's what we saw Monday, on the last day of a toy trade show.

It showed off toys designed for independent stores that sell high quality toys, and as we discovered, there were some pretty interesting vendors.

"The toys that we have is -- I have my lemon light," 13-year-old Ava N. Simmons says. "So, we put copper or zinc inside of a fruit or vegetable and it creates an acid-based reaction inside of it, and when that happens, it creates a current and that current is made because we connect the alligator wires with it."

Ava has started up her own toy business. Among other things, she sells STEM kits for kids. She says she struggled at an early age with dyslexia and other learning issues but overcame them. She calls her company "Team Genius Squad."

"I always tell people that if you're doing something and it's hard, keep doing it because it's gonna get easier along the way," Ava says. "So, I always tell people never let your challenges define your success or future and never give up."

We spoke with the president of Astra, the company that organized this show, and she says she hopes people will seek out independent toy stores because in her words, "They have really cool stuff."
