MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A new kind of show will light up the Milwaukee skies this July 3. Milwaukee County Parks announced a lighted drone show will take place Thursday, July 3, bringing the sky to life over McKinley Beach.

According to a news release, the drone show -- sponsored by Michael F. Hupy -- will feature three waves of 900 drones lasting approximately 14 minutes each, blending cutting-edge drone technology with an original synchronized soundtrack for a dazzling 45-minute performance. Viewers can expect awe-inspiring images of Milwaukee’s most iconic landmarks, and other patriotic and local themes.

The one-of-a-kind drone show will be put on by Caledonia-based company Northern Lights Drone Shows. Chief Operating Officer Andy Ackmann says he first started the company after having synchronized Christmas lighting as his hobby back in 2007. After being asked to put on shows for the public, he bought an initial fleet of drones last year and doubled his fleet this year.

"I like fireworks, and I like drones. I think they can work complimentary to each other. Drones are a different ballgame, it’s a different story. You can actually tell a story in the sky, and really you connect with people emotionally a whole lot more," shared Ackmann. He was one of thousands that would go to the traditional firework shows himself. "That's why it was such a heartbreaking thing to see they stopped doing it, which is why it feels so good to be bringing it back."

“Milwaukee County is at its best when we come together to create memorable, inclusive experiences for everyone. We’re proud to bring the community together for this first-of-its-kind drone show, highlighting not just our beautiful lakefront but the creativity and collaboration that make Milwaukee County so special,” said Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley. “Thanks to the Milwaukee Parks Foundation’s incredible efforts to secure sponsorships, this drone show is another example of how we’re investing in our parks, our neighborhoods, and our shared sense of community pride.”

Drone technology has come "leaps and bounds," shared Ackmann, stating that drones can fly within two centimeters of accuracy.

“The July 3 lakefront celebration is an important event for thousands of community members. I was committed to doing whatever it takes to bring it back this year. I am grateful for the return of the celebration with a drone show, and I am honored to be the presenting sponsor,” said Michael F. Hupy.

The fireworks show was canceled in 2024 due to a lack of sponsorship, and the county parks director signaled the popular event may have fizzled out for good. Park officials said the fireworks show in 2023 cost $350,000 with $20,000 in additional costs for extra staffing, fencing, dumpsters and porta potties.

Many people were saddened by the cancelation, like Milwaukee County residents Jill Neimon and Lisa McKenna. "it was really disappointing when there was no show," shared Neimon.

This year's 2025 drone show will start after dark, at approximately 9:15 p.m. A makeup date is scheduled for July 6.
