MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) --- Sherman Park Grocery is celebrating its first year of success. The store is meeting vital needs in one of Milwaukee's food deserts.

Toya Wimberley is no stranger to the store. As a regular, she says she trusts that she will find what she needs at an affordable price. "A grocery store. We needed this," she said. Sherman Park Grocery is one of few places' neighbors can get to within walking distance to purchase fresh produce. The store also provides many other important household items.

Sherman Park Grocery also promotes growth in the community by offering items from other local vendors. "Everything you need right here," said Wimberley. Maurice Wince co-owns the store with his wife.

"We are one of 13 food deserts right here on the corner of Sherman and Fond du Lac, addressing childhood obesity, diabetes, and other health ailments," he said.

Wince says in his first year of business, the response from the community has been positive. He says he's humbled by the support. While he's grateful for a successful year one, Wince says he's already got his eyes set on the future.

"Our goal will never change. Which is food insecurity and bringing fresh fruits and vegetables to this community," he said.

Looking to the future, Wince says growing into a larger space would be his target. Until then, the store hopes to continue supporting neighbors with the goods they need, while continuing to build its core customer base.
