MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A Milwaukee police officer was shot by another officer during a struggle with a suspect near 6th and Garfield. Police say the suspect was involved in a shooting around 10 p.m. Tuesday, July 14 near 9th and Hadley.

Police say they attempted to stop a suspect in a vehicle that they say was involved in a shooting in Milwaukee. 

Officials say the vehicle took off and that's when a chase started. The vehicle ended up breaking down near 8th and North Avenue and the 24-year-old driver ran. 

Ten minutes after the incident began, Milwaukee police say they found the suspect and during a struggle, a shot was fired by one officer and another officer was hit by the bullet. According to officials, the officers gun went off while holstered while they were arresting the man and putting him in a squad car as he resisted arrest. The injured officer is 33-years-old and has two years of service with the Milwaukee Police Department. He suffered non-life threatening injuries. 

“The circumstances related to the discharge are still under investigation. The suspect is a 24-year-old male from Milwaukee who is in custody for his own gun-related offense. A firearm was recovered in his vehicle,” Milwaukee Police Department Captain Paul Lough said. 

One neighbor says she sees police pursuits often in the area. 

“Police, you know, they’ll chase...North Avenue is right across the street over there so they’ll chase people all the time so I’ve seen that,” Sandra Williams said.

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) --  A Milwaukee Police officer was accidentally shot by another officer while trying to arrest a suspect near N. 6th St. and W. Garfield Ave. on Tuesday, July 14. 

The officer who was shot is expected to be okay.

According to police, officers observed a vehicle wanted in association to a shooting near N. 9th St. and W. Hadley St. around 10:10 p.m. 

Officers attempted to stop the car, but the suspect drove off. After a short pursuit, the suspect's car broke down near N. 8th St. and W. North Ave. The suspect then ran off.

Responding officers located the suspect near N. 6th St. and W. Garfield Ave. around 10:20 p.m. The suspect was taken into custody. While being placed in the squad, the suspect resisted and a brief struggle ensued. During the struggle, police say a shot was discharged from one of the arresting officer's guns and hit another officer. 

The injured officer is a 33-year-old Milwaukee man with 2 years experience with the department. 

The suspect is a 24-year-old Milwaukee man. The case has been referred to the district attorney's office for criminal charges.

The circumstances regarding the gun discharge is currently under investigation.
