MPS' Westside Academy cleared to reopen after lead cleanup

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Another Milwaukee public school has been cleared of lead risks.
Westside Academy will welcome students back on the first day of classes for the 2025-26 school year, scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 2.
“We are working hard to get our schools ready for students this fall, and this news today is another indication of our progress,” Superintendent Brenda Cassellius said. “I want to again thank the students, families, and staff at Westside Academy for their patience and flexibility this year. I’m so glad they will be able to start the school year this September back in their building.”
Westside students and staff were temporarily relocated to Andrew S. Douglas Middle School in May to allow MPS and contracted crews to clean up high lead levels.
MPS will continue lead cleanup work at district buildings this summer. The Milwaukee Health Department has cleared eight schools so far.
The district says they're working toward eliminating all lead dangers from schools built before 1978 by the end of this year.
